Welcome to Penang Hokkien Podcast

Thanks for visiting the first Penang style Hokkien podcast. First of all, I am John Ong. I was born in Penang, raised, and went to school in Penang. I left Penang for school here in the USA. I ended up getting a job, and as of now, I’m permanently living in the USA. But I DO miss everything about Penang. But mostly the people of course. And the beautiful and witty dialect of Penang Hokkien was the core of my inspiration to start this show. Here’s how a little bit about how this show came about.

This podcast started when I was chatting with my friend K.E. over the phone. There are just too many silly and fun things we discussed that were a total waste without sharing it with all of you. So, I started posting some recordings on my original show, Ongline Podcast.

Since my listenership over at the other site is growing rapidly, including those who do not necessarily always enjoying listening to Hokkien podcasts, I thought I’d start a new channel. That’s how PenangHokkien.com came about. Thanks to my friends K.E., Heow Hong, Kelvin, and K.K. the idea sprung up.

I also want to acknowledge Kayes from PenangTalk.com for his generous contribution of his photo to my title graphic. Please visit his site for more wonderful pictures. If you want to use any of his photographs, please email him, he does sell his pictures. Thanks Kayes!

This show needs your help to get to the right audience. There are no major media out there other than some blogs, that I can use to promote this site. You, the listener will be the one that can recruit more listeners. Please spread the words out to everyone you know who might be interested in listening to the very first Penang style Hokkien podcast!

Added in July 2008:

Every year, I always get asked when is Penang Hokkien’s official anniversary. The official date where I posted the first official episode was on August 18, 2005 – PGHK #1 Tsunami Rumor. But since I started doing some trial shows prior to that one, I have decided to make the anniversary a month-long celebration. We should celebrate Penang Hokkien every August of the year. Thanks for all your support.
