Guest: Xiamen Ah Long

Ah Long and I discussed the future of Hokkien in Penang. It is certain that most of you who listen to the show, intentional or not, are supporting the growth and re-popularize the usage of Hokkien.

However, there are still a lot of work to be done to preserve or mother tongue. Parents are focusing so much on English and Mandarin that we are losing our identity as Chinese Penangites. Not only in Hokkien, but other dialects as well.

This is a challenge for me and for of you to go out and spread the good news of preserving Hokkien and other dialects. As parents, you may want to start by speaking to your children in your own dialect. And send them to classes like the ones organized by Penang Performing Art Center (Penang PAC)

We talked about flood this week. We all read and heard so many stories from our neighbor Thailand about the flood. We talked about the danger and sometimes for kids, fun, of a flood. We also have a listener reported directly from Bangkok, and shared some pictures too. Obviously we can't omit the disaster that a big flood can cause.

One of listener's friends who is a St John's ambulance member shared this link on Facebook asking for donation in the form of bottled water.

If you know of organizations who would take monetary donations, please do so, but beware of scams. Just check carefully and use your own judgement.

Guest: BihZhu

I brought in a special pearl this week. She is an up and coming singer from Penang. I am lucky enough to have her with me in the studio. She talked about her music background from way back in high school. Her participation in the Share the Love project. Her upcoming solo album. Her CDs will be sold at her uncle's coffee shop.

Support your fellow Penangite talent, like her Facebook: Bihzhu Music page and follow Bihzhu on Twitter.

Download "The Heart Way" and four more other songs for free on Share The Love

See BihZhu live, performing at the Penang Jazz Festival in December this year.

But I managed to tipu a bunch of new listeners to come chat with me. And many of them didn't go out and pai kui. So glad the old birds and new birds can make this show fun!

Xiamen Ah Long suggested this topic for us. Did you take piano lessons or organ lessons? What was your experience? Did you like them or hated them? How about the examinations? Laugh with us as my guests shared their best and worst experience in their piano and organ lessons. Some cried. Some had to play with a cardboard hand-drawn keyboard. What was yours?

You may not want to have lunch or dinner when you listen to the end of this podcast.

I plan to have a recording this Saturday. Please check back on this site in a few days or friend the show on Facebook. I'll announce the topics here and on Facebook.

Being a big foodie, I invited one of the engineers, literally, who created Little Red Dot Kitchen. They sell naturally produced Bak Kua (or Bak Kwa), which is a kind of Chinese barbeque jerky. Learn more about their Bak Kua (I write it as either Bak Kuaⁿ or Bak kNua) and how these engineers started this business.
Also find out more about how methodically they tested and came up with their recipe.
They have the regular Bak Kua, Lite Bak Kua, and even, Turkey Bak Kua, which is surprisingly good. Learn more about all these bak kua in this week's podcast.

Guests: WiwiWawa, Puto Jee, Ipoh Kiaⁿ, & Si Niau.

This week, I invite you into the roller coaster ride in WiwiWawa's car, which is our portable studio. There is an upgrade to the car. I asked them about their first impression this time when they saw me. We talked about multiple topics including detailed introductions of some new guests, WiwiWawa's driving habit, but one major one is how I lost my weight.

The long awaited topic is finally here. We are talking about SEX! How appropriate that we are talking about sex on Valentine's Day. Especially after all the encouragement to our Muslim fellow Malaysian about this trap of immoral activities. Well, that's exactly what we're talking about — the trap. Like people only have sex on Valentine's Day.

And our daring guests really shared a lot with us. So much that we have to split this show into two. We talked for more than two hours. Here's the first half of the show. Be sure to come back next week for the second part. I hope this show will bring you lots of action!

Come back on Wednesday to listen to the actual recording at the actual restaurant.
I definitely suggest using headphones to listen to the show on Wednesday. It will make your mouth water.

We can't avoid talking about the ghost festival. This time we focus on when and how people offer food for the hungry ghosts. What are the things we do and shouldn't do during this period.

I started the show by addressing the issue that several listeners of ours raised. Recently, more and more of our guests are using some very inconsiderate racist and derogative terms for other ethnic groups. I voiced my own opinion on how I am completely against this kind of language. I don't disagree that racial discrimination from all sides are still there. But being racist and calling people names aren't the solutions.

On a lighter note, I would like to invite all of you to join me along with a few other members of the panel to talk about podcasting this coming Sunday, August 29, 2010 from 2PM to 3:30PM. Butterworth Megamall Public Bookstore.
I'll be waking up in the middle of the night to talk to you all live, I hope you'll go support this event and spread the word about podcasting.

Some of you may have remembered the ang-mo·, Michael Churchman who appeared on a couple episodes of PGHK.

This week, I spent the entire episode chatting with him. Obviously I am impressed with his ability, interest, and knowledge about Hokkien. And I'm curious as to how and why he started learning Hokkien. Find out in this episode.

He has also agreed to share his studies and knowledge about Penang Hokkien with us on our website.

Go to a new segment on PGHK called Learn More About Penang Hokkien to read Michael's article.

After you listen to this episode, actually, while you're listening to this episode, head over to How to Write Hokkien in the Roman Alphabet – An-choaⁿ iong Ang-mo∙-ji sia Hok-kian-oa and learn the standard way of writing Penang Hokkien.
