PGHK #264 Sek Ki (色旗)

Aug 23, 2010 | Podcast | 9 comments

We can’t avoid talking about the ghost festival. This time we focus on when and how people offer food for the hungry ghosts. What are the things we do and shouldn’t do during this period.

I started the show by addressing the issue that several listeners of ours raised. Recently, more and more of our guests are using some very inconsiderate racist and derogative terms for other ethnic groups. I voiced my own opinion on how I am completely against this kind of language. I don’t disagree that racial discrimination from all sides are still there. But being racist and calling people names aren’t the solutions.

On a lighter note, I would like to invite all of you to join me along with a few other members of the panel to talk about podcasting this coming Sunday, August 29, 2010 from 2PM to 3:30PM. Butterworth Megamall Public Bookstore.

I’ll be waking up in the middle of the night to talk to you all live, I hope you’ll go support this event and spread the word about podcasting.

I heard of the kid died also! My mum told me it came out in the papers or something, somehow placing the child on the “offering” table is like offering to the Tai Su Yeh…scary

    Hi John,

I have been listening to Penang Hokkien for a year or two now and really enjoy this podcast. I am going through some of your old recordings (since I actually listen to your podcast almost everyday and the new ones only come out once a week) and I totally support your disagreement of derogatory remarks and names calling on other races. I agree that racism exist everywhere but we should not always relate it back to race. It’s only a specific individual and not the whole race but it is our own thinking that make matter worse. Xiamen Ah Long made a really good point there, “If we want changes, it should start with us”.

Lastly, kam sia lu for such a great podcast and keep up the good job!

    Regards,
    W
