Type Penang Hokkien using familiar letters, then choose Chinese characters or romanised words.
Our keyboard uses romanisation based mainly on Tâi-lô, adapted for Penang Hokkien. You can begin without tones, use abbreviations, and benefit from supported spelling variations.
Set Up the Keyboard on iPhone
- Install and open 拍字盤.
- Wait for the app to finish preparing its keyboard resources.
- Open your iPhone’s Settings → General → Keyboard → Keyboards.
- Tap Add New Keyboard, then select 拍字盤 under Third-Party Keyboards.
- Open Notes or another app where you can type. Touch and hold the globe button to select the Penang Hokkien keyboard.
Allow Full Access is optional. You can type without enabling it.
Start Typing
You do not need to know the tones to begin. Type the spelling without tone marks, tone numbers or hyphens, then choose a candidate.
For example:
- 好食 – type hotsiah
- 無閒– type boeng
- 有緣– type uian

Show Romanisations
Romanised candidates are hidden by default.
To display matching romanisations, open Keyboard Settings → Candidate Bar and enable Show Matching Romanisations.
You can also enable Show Partial-Match Romanisations for additional romanised candidates.
Word Continuations
After you select a word, the keyboard may suggest a continuation. You can choose a suggestion or continue typing.
To turn this feature off, open Keyboard Settings → Candidate Bar and disable Word Continuations.
Need Help ?
The keyboard does not appear
Check that you have added it in iPhone Settings, then touch and hold the globe button to switch keyboards. Some apps and secure text fields use Apple’s keyboard instead.
A new dictionary entry does not appear
Make sure you have the latest version of Penang Hokkien Keyboard installed from the App Store. Dictionary improvements are included in app updates; you do not need to download or update dictionary files separately.
You cannot find a word
Try another spelling or select shorter words individually. Our spelling support does not cover every possible variation.
Suggestions + Feedback
Open Suggestions + Feedback in the app to:
- Suggest a Word that you cannot find.
- Report a Problem with the keyboard.
- Share a “Spelling” that you would like us to consider for fuzzy matching.
You do not need to know the standard romanisation. Explain the meaning or include an example sentence to help us understand.
Submitting feedback requires an internet connection. An e-mail address is optional, but please include one if you would like us to contact you.

If you cannot access the app, use our online feedback form and select Report a Problem.
For technical problems, please include your device model, iOS version, app version and a description of what happened. Leave your e-mail address if you would like a reply.
