Hi John! Reto(Swiss guy) was the one who had introduced me to ur show few months ago….I have been ur “loyal” fan since then…..please keep up the good work!!! I’m 100% pure Penang “lan”….from Green Lane who had studied in Heng Ee High School. I’ve forwarded ur “podcast” to all my friends back in Penang in order to gain more listeners to support ur show. Thanks for ur Penang Hokkein Podcast as the show had reminded me so much of Penang Hokkein slangs as I have never “used” it for long time since I’m a bit “Ah Mo Sai”, ha!!! Now, as I’m listening to ur show…I’m picking my own mother tongue bit by bit…one at the time!!!

    Oh thank you Reynard!
Thanks for your support, and your promotion, and most of all for enjoying the show!

Hi John! I like this particular podcast because it allows me learn more about penang hokkien expression which I find myself losing it overtime. I really appreciate your effort in finding the original Penang hokkien phrases, like trying to find the equivalent hokkien phrase for “contribute”, instead of just substituing it with malay or english phrases. Oh yeah, about Penang hokkien, I hope to see Mr Tan Choon Hoe (tanchoonhoe@hotmail.com), who wrote a book about Penang Hokkien Dialect, to be invited to your Podcast. He could be giving us advanced Penang Hokkien lessons, particularly penang hokkien phrases that many of us have forgotten.

Believe it or not, your podcast is so far the most important chapter of Penang Hokkien Chronicle. For the first time Penang Hokkien is recorded and aired, hence promoting its declining usage in Northen Malaya. Even if one day Penang Hokkien becomes extinct or so anglicized that it becomes a creole, which seems very likely, the world will still know how Penang Hokkien sounds like.

Like you, I don’t belong to the Hokkien clan. Still, I find it very charming and afraid of not hearing it in the future.

In fact this is not the first time I’ve send u an e-mail. Nevertheless, just wanna say “Kam Sia” for making my day when I’m down as ur show always cheer me up n made me grinned from ear to ear whenever I’ve heard u yakking n laughing on ur show….for a good reason of course!!!
I’ve told Reto about how much I like ur show n we both have agreed how talented u r even though he doesn’t even understand a word of our Penang Hokkien, ha!
I’m really looking forward to hear from u soon n hopefully I will be ur “guest” in near future to speak to u on air “live”, ha!!!…..just like u, my Hokkien also “pua tan sai” but I’m sure u speak better Hokkien than I do since I don’t use it most of the time as I’m now working in Singapore for the past 6 years n their Hokkien is so much different form ours, hence, I speak English most of the time…well, occasionally a bit Mandarin n Bahasa Melayu.
Keep up the good work dude n make us “Out n Proud” yet “Not Too Loud”!!!!
Another thing…thank Q so much about “Chau Leng Tai”…from ur show- Penang Hokkein #6 Nyonya Kuih. Pang Sai…I used to be sounded like “cleft palate” when I speak in Hokkien or English, hahahah!!!! :)….n I still do, ha!!!!!

Reynard: I’d LOVE to have you on the show. I think I’m going to make it a fairly regular event to have one or two listeners on my show. I think it adds new flavor to the show. If you want to hear more about gay subjects, go to my Ongline Podcast, shows #94, #95, and #96 were very interesting gay topics. You should subscribe to that show too, if you haven’t already done that. Again, thanks for helping us promote Penang Hokkien.

Not bad also these guests…but of course cannot beat Heow Hong! 😛

  9. John Ong

kshern: Of course! Our own star Heow Hong.
Anyway, I think I’d like to start making Penang Hokkien more participatory. I love the interactivity when I have listeners as guests. We’ll see how that goes.
