PGHK #269 Tham Chiah (贪食)

I have been encouraging my listeners to go out and record their food adventure. And when they found something good, I want them to record their food outings. This time, a bunch of our PGHK Tham Chiah Kui (贪食鬼) go out to Lao San Dong Bak Kut Teh.

Come back on Wednesday to listen to the actual recording at the actual restaurant.

I definitely suggest using headphones to listen to the show on Wednesday. It will make your mouth water.

PGHK #268 Chap Go· (十五)

The ways we celebrate Chap Go· Me· is so different these days compared to my childhood. We discussed the differences in mooncakes, lanterns, and mooncake festival celebrations.

If everything goes well, I am planning to do a big PGHK Mooncake Festival in Penang in 2011. Are you interested in joining?

No, you did not go to the wrong website.

This is still Penang Hokkien Podcast. But the chat I had with Joan is so Penang-centric that I couldn’t pass sharing it with you right here on PGHK.

Thanks to many of you who wrote in and called in with your messages informing me how much you enjoyed Joan. Since this show is also pre-recorded. I play and respond to your messages next week.

I hope you will enjoy as much I on how Joan is connected in a very special way to Penang.

PGHK #264 Sek Ki (色旗)

We can’t avoid talking about the ghost festival. This time we focus on when and how people offer food for the hungry ghosts. What are the things we do and shouldn’t do during this period.

I started the show by addressing the issue that several listeners of ours raised. Recently, more and more of our guests are using some very inconsiderate racist and derogative terms for other ethnic groups. I voiced my own opinion on how I am completely against this kind of language. I don’t disagree that racial discrimination from all sides are still there. But being racist and calling people names aren’t the solutions.

On a lighter note, I would like to invite all of you to join me along with a few other members of the panel to talk about podcasting this coming Sunday, August 29, 2010 from 2PM to 3:30PM. Butterworth Megamall Public Bookstore.

I’ll be waking up in the middle of the night to talk to you all live, I hope you’ll go support this event and spread the word about podcasting.

Hokkien Tones

Michael Churchman is back to share his research and knowledge about the various tones in Hokkien.

You will find both his pieces about how to write Hokkien with roman alphabets (Pe·h-oa-ji 白话字) and his latest addition — Hokkien Tones, on the top right corner of Penang Hokkien Podcast website.

I hope you will find this as interesting and worthwhile as I do.

(Also, please send a thank-you note/comment to Michael for taking the time to generously share his knowledge with us)
