wa….at last the original cast of PH has returned albeit for just one show… 😛

however evolved this podcast is or will be, one should not forget the contributions of the trio of Miku John, Hiao Hong and KE in making this possible by establishing a base of loyal early adopter listeners in the early days. the fact that so many listeners (old and new) are constantly requesting for the ‘old birds’ like hiao hong to return is proof that they are in reality the heart and soul of PH.

    happy first anniversary PH!

p/s grab hold of HH and record hours and hours with him so will have episodes and episodes to air in the future… 😉

Haha, thank you Ah John for giving me the undeserved ?? hao3tniao4 title. I’m now the ?? who still need a lot of tuition. Haha, so ?? pnai1sheh3. I really hope I can do more for Penang Hokkien in the future.

?? = tseng3 lek1. ? has two colloquial pronunciations: when used alone it is usually lat1, otherwise it is lek1. Literal pronunciation is lit1, which is rarely used in common speech. I think the rule is the same elsewhere. I am not really sure the most common pronunciation in Penang but I?”feel” that tseng3lek1 sounds more natural, tseng3lat1 is abit strange to me. Again this may be subjective.

?? = I am not sure how it is commonly pronounced or used in Penang. In my limited Penang Hokkien experience breakfast, lunch, dinner are not used directly in conversation, instead a more indirect way of saying it is “I’ve eaten in the morning” ????? wa4za1ki4jiak1liao4 rather than “I’ve eaten breakfast”. According to Nicholas Bodman who wrote a “Malayan Amoy Hokkien” book around 1950s says breakfast is Malayan Amoy Hokkien is “chiak3 za1 ki4” ??? or in English literally “eat morning” Hiao Hong might be right when pronoucing ?? as buan1can1, since ? is pronouced as buan1, not meh, which is actually the pronunciation of ? . Another way of saying breakfast, lunch or dinner might be ?? ?Northen Malay, Zhangzhou: am1tnui3; Southern Malaya, Quanzhou: am1teng3). I’ve not heard this expression myself in Penang due to my limited exposure but I think it makes sense since if not mistaken in Penang Hokkien ? tnui3/tneng3 is used as ??? for meals, for example ??? jiak1sna3tnui3/teng3, or in Mandarin expression ??? yi2dun4fan4. I’m not sure what is the common pronunciation for ?, whether it is teng3 or tnui3 in Penang. I think it is tnui3, just like ? is mui not meng in Penang / Zhangzhou variant.

I refer to dictionaries a lot but I don’t really trust them and instead rely on the most common expression current in Penang. I think there is no right or wrong pronunciation, only different one. I myself prefer the most common, general expression on Penang island, but language keeps changing even more so for Penang Hokkien which is never formalized. For me dictionaries are just for reference, and language should be based on living people, not lifeless papers. So what does everyone think “dinner” is called in Penang Hokkien? Based your own experience Is it
    1. ?? buan1can1 (hiaohong, Taiwan Hokkien or formal/literal way of saying perhaps?)
    2. ?? am1teng3 (Taiwan Hokkien dictionary noted this)
    3. ?? am1tnui3 (Zhangzhou or Penang Hokkien?)
    4. ??? jiak1am1meh2 (???noted in 1950s Malayan Hokkien)
    5. ??? am1meh2jiak1 (my invention, or might’ve actually heard it before)
    6. NA [don’t exist] Instead indirect way of saying is used like ????? wa4am1meh2jiak1liao4 is used instead.

    Thanks.
