Ah John ah, Jerry is not Lin Peh lah….. Jerry is Jerry, Lin Peh is Lin Peh…different leh
Shua Hu: Thanks for pointing out the error. I DO know that they are two seperate persons. But I was using the show notes from previous show’s template. And I forgot to change that! Thanks for catching it.
Ah John and Shau Hu – Well you have made me famous. I had a dinner party on the 8th day of CNY and my friends heard the podcast #26 and we all had such a good laugh. Now Ah John I know why you can sing the Teochew opera – so you are half Teochew! From your mother side, I imagine? Where is Shau Hu living? Is this your nick name, Shau Hu? How is it that Shau Hu’s Fujian hua is so good? I am very impressed. By the way Ah John, my brain blanks out all the bad and naughty words you and your friends use. I am learning Teochew from the Internet as well as Fujian hua from your podcast, and I also do not learn any of the bad teochew words. Not suitable for a female to use such words Haha
Ji Juyee, Shua Hu is living in Bukit Mertajam. My Fujian is not really good lah… there are alot of my fujian mixed with teochew.. You know lah, BM area go so many Teochew people.
Where you learn Teochew? Mind to share the url for the site that you learn teochew? I’m thinking to have a teochew section in my podcast too…may be you can be the guest…hahahaha
Hi Ah John & Shua Hu, I think you guys should add your podcast in the Malaysian Chinese Bloggers Directory, will help to bring more people in:
https://malaysian-blogger.blogspot.com/
goh3sneh1 = ?? (wu3sheng1)
Shua Hu,
Surprised to learn that a lot of Teochew people also Pai1Tni3Gong1. Also, I can’t wait for your Teochew podcast!
Hello….. John: I am sorry I “put you aeroplane” the other days. Lets see if we can get together another time and talk about something else…… ^__^
Shua Hua: Do you speak Teow Chew at home ? Well, I have a very close local friend in Xiamen here who’s from Shantou – Sua Tow…… I went to his home before, I can catch about 60% of the conversation on the streets. Guess what, in Shantou you can the best Koay Teow Th’ng ever, although I love Penang one. Please setup your podcast ! I’d really want to show him our Teow Chew, he never heard any other Teow Chew accent apart from Shantou and Chaozhou.
Penangknia: Teow Chew is in Guangdong Province but right at the border of Fujian Province, I am sure you know the dialect is actually part of Minnan. Which means, they follow a lot of traditions of Fujian people, they do Pai Tni Gong…… Same here !
BTW – besides promoting Penang Hokkien, do we have any Hainanese in the group ? ^__^
Penangknia, we are thinking of creating our own Malaysia Podcast Network to promote Malaysia’s podcast to others. Beside that, we are also creating a Online Magazine for Blog, PhotoBlog and Podcast. Check it out at, https://blogazine.emuse.cc. I’m one of the volunteer editor for podcasting. hehehe
I don’t speak Teochew at home, I’m pure Hokkien but got alot of Teochew friends. In BM, I think about 50% is Teochew people. Last time during around my age of 10, my neighbour is Teochew people from China. His teochew is really “deep”, but I still manage to understand it.hahahaha.. Sometime, my teochew is more like teochew then the real teochew.hahaha..
Look like Teochew podcast is a good try. I will arrange on this…
Shua Hu, I will go to your potcast area fo find an email for you and send you the URLs where I learn Teochew. I also watch TV and listen to radio from Shantau to expose myself to more teochew. I do not know any teochew people in LONDON. So my Xiamen friends speak to me in Fujian hua and I talk to them in Teochew. It would be wonderful to speak teochew in your podcast. Do find me in SKYPE and phone me. I would love to talk teochew to you and listen to your lovely Hokkien [Fujian] hua. Your Hokkien tone is so lovely to listen to, just like Xiamen Ah Long. Nothing against Ah John’s.
listen radio to shantau?? that is great.. pls email the url to me as well.
hahahaha… next time Ah John will restricted me to talk in his show already….
So Juyee, you are Malaysian?? Which part of malaysia is your hometown?
Wow ! I have a fan here…… >__^ …… Yes ! Yes ! Yes ! Juyee, you can Skype me too. And if you want, I can invite my good friend here to talk to you, but he speaks original Teow Chew from Shantou. You can learn a lot from him…… ^__^
Juyee…… I know it’s illegal but you can “stolenly” go download 2 Teow Chew songs from my website…… Specially uploaded for you…… Damn old-fashioned, but do enjoy yah.
Ah John…… The 6th song is for you to enjoy. In Taiwan Hakka + Hokkien…… Go get it from my website before I delete it.
Ah Long ????Only for Juyee. Can I download bo??? I got some nice dialect song too, like Hakka, teochew & etc. But don’t where can upload for you guys. paiseh
Xiamen Ah Long: Gam sia for the teochew songs. But …………. I do not have your website address. How do I search for you on Skype? Do I search for Xiamen Ah Long? When will you be talking again? You and Shua Hu can speak Hokkien so well. It is encouraging for me that perhaps one day I can speak teochew and hokkien well too.
Shua Hu: My father came from Shantou and lived in Kuching. So that would be my Malaysian hometown technically. However, I have never lived there, just visited the place. I have been to Kuching as many times as to Penang and both places have such lovely food. So I really love the Min Nan [teochew and hokkien] and the Noyna food. I learned Putong hua in London and now I am learning Teochew and Hokkien. My siblings are desperately trying to get me to say the tones correctly in teochew because there are 8 tones in Min Nan hua and only 4 in Putong hua. I have not spoken teochew for too many years but I can now hold a teochew conversation with my siblings for about two hours since I have been listening to the Penang Hokkien Podcast. If I cannot say the word or phrase, I say it in Putong hua or Hokkien, and if I cannot say it in either, I say it in English and they then teach me how to say in teochew. This podcast is so good because it improves my teochew in a funny kind of way. Perhaps it is because these two languages are both Min Nan hua.
I will give you the urls when I get home today from work. My students have enjoyed listening to you speaking in English in your podcast. It is really very nice to hear your Malaysian way of speaking English. But I like hearing you speaking in Hokkien the best.
I LOVE to see such livelihood in the comment area. Especially about new ideas, new podcasts. This means, my work, a long with many of my guests’ effort, are all paying off. I first created Penang Hokkien, mostly because I want to spark some interest so that I can get more content created from Penang. I missed listening to local talk.
Juyee: Adui. Pengsan…… (in case you dun speak Malay, it means FAINTED)…… You can just move your mouse cursor to my name Xiamen Ah Long and you will get my website. Anyway…… and you can look for me in Skype…… …… Welcome !
Shua Hu: Beh Sai Siak Seng Teh. Go ahead and download. I would appreciate if you can send me and I will upload to my website…… ^__^
Send to can keep 2GB of data. I have fast speed here. Please send ahead…… ^__^
Tuition Time !
Message = Liu Gen (as in Hokkien version of Durian: Liu Len but change the Len to Gen)
Taoism = Toh Kau
Happening = Please say the normal Lau Juak
Hardisk = Please do not translate, just say Hardisk…… Nenek pun tak faham
Quality = Pin Chit
Records = Cheong Pen
Process = Koay Teng (Teng as in STOP)
Countdown = Toh Sui (simply Toh Thau Peng Sui – upside down count)
Summary = Kai Yau
Actually…… If we dunno any word hio, should simply use other dialect or English / Bahasa to replace before we know the right way of saying those. You know, we want to develop and enrich Hokkien, not everyone is good at it, and it’s hard to preserve if we dun follow standard. We should not simply translate from Mandarin, Mandarin is an independent language, modern language. Direct translation often makes people laugh…… And what we’re doing so hard here will then be meaningless…… What say you all ? I am so happy to see people discussing about Penang Hokkien. Viva Penang !
^______^
PS: Damn it, so cold in Xiamen today…… >__
Xiamen Ah Long – thank you for the wonderful Teochew songs.
Shua Hu: The easiest website for learning Teochew is designed by Gimgiak from Washington. He speaks in completely pure Teochew. His parents are from Shantau and he was willing to learn teochew, unlike me when I was young. How shameful of me!! https://students.washington.edu/taing721/tc.htm
The Giginang website is really excellent. It has an English Teochew dictionary. It uses the same Pengim as Gimgiak’s Learn Teochew website. https://gaginang.org/
Pengim is like Pinyin for Mandarin, except that it is for teochew.
The ?? TV and Radio can be found on https://www.czbtv.com/spdb/
If you are in Malaysia then your time is the same as Shantau and therefore you do not have to wake up in early hours of the night / morning to hear and learn teochew by watching teochew tv and listening to teochew radio, unlike me in London. It is wonderful, it has even teochew cooking lessons for those who are very tam jiat! [Greedy]
You need to know Putong hua to listen to the news but it is wonderful when the local people are interviewed and they reply in teochew. They speak just like my dad and our relations – those from Shantau, not like me a banana! I am not going to be a banana for long! Haha
Ah John would really like the Teochew opera as he sings so well from the TV station.
Ah Long, ok..I will send it to you but I think I dun hv ur email leh… mind to post it here or u can skype me. Actually, when I post the comment, I already finished download all songs. hahahaha
Juyee, thanks. Sure I will check out those web site.
anyone would like to add me in their skype, my id is mymacosx
Alamak. I forgot that this comment area erases URL automatically…… Have to use some HTML tag then……
I will upload a few more nice songs also…… If you guys know any Hainanese friends, please let me know. I really want to learn it, so badly…… I am half Hock Chew and half Hai Nam…… There’s no way for me to use Hock Chew but I really want to brush up my Hai Nam because my mother’s side still speaks it daily……
Xiamen Ah Long’s website = https://www.aokh1979.com (just click on my name above)
Xiamen Ah Long’s e-mail = aokh1979 @ gmail.com (please remove the spaces)

Cantik ! Then tonight I can listen to them. Send as many as possible, will upload to my website for sharing once I listen to them tonight.
Penangknia: I need to discuss something with you. I know you have a self-created phonetic system for Penang Hokkien…… Want to study more from you, and we should distribute a standard phonetic system for all Penangites…… Hey-Hey. What say you ? Are you already doing it as a big project ? >__^
Ah Long, I still got alot but too lazy to send liao… may be when I free lah… there is 1 Hainan song in the file that I sent to you. ????
Great idea for the BIG project… go go go penangknia and ah long
Shua Hu…… You’re so ho-liau…… I uploaded all the songs to my website liao. Please remember the password is my home-town huh. I put password in case the webmaster wants to track me…… Penang…… Yeah……
Ladies and Gentlemen – go download !
Ah Long ah, it didn’t ask for password. Just said that “failed to open page”.. look like cannot leh….
Hahaha, the day has finally arrived when someone also is interested in establishing phonetic scheme for Penang Hokkien. I transcribe some Hokkien words / phrases and to be consistent so that I can understand what I wrote I have somehow semi-establish my own phonetic system for Penang Hokkien. It is not full fledge IPA (International phonetic Alphabates) but mirrors it closely. Also I have imitated Mandarin’s Pinyin by maximizing the use of all ASCII alphabates. As I said it is not 100% ready but I’ve been able to remain mostly consistent and has the ability to read my own Penang Hokkien Pinyin.
Let me know when you are ready.

I will first introduce the representation of Penang Hokkien Tones, which will only be four instead of the traditional 7 used. I’ve not decreased the actual Penang Hokkien Tones but instead annotates the ?? with p,k,t and share their tones symbol with non ?? tones.

Shau Hu: I look forward to you setting up a Teochew section in your Shau Hu’s Kopi Tiam and talking as your guest. Remember I am just relearning my Teochew so we all can have such a good laugh! Haha – [I will have to borrow words from Hokkien, Mandarin, English to completely express myself!]
Hi Penangknia: Lets discuss it through mail, would be easier if you can send me any document. I actually am in the midst of creating my own Cantonese scheme, although there’re few available, but I found these not so consummate. Using Hanyu Pinyin is a more efficient way to maximise the use of ASCII alphabets, like what you mentioned. Hey, I successfully invented a Korean scheme to record words under English environment. Should introduce to Korea government, maybe I will get a patent or copyright something…… $$$
Juyee, you have to add me in ur skype 1st ..hahahaha… if not, how to talk?? hahahaha My TeoChew may be different with yours. Anyway, it may be fun. Then my podcast will became Rojak podcast already. Got English, Mandarin, Hokkine, Teochew & may be cantonese.
Shua Hu: I can understand Penang Teochew as my mum’s closed friend was from Penang and I spoke to her in Teochew. Actually my Teochew is not so bad. Rojak is good, both language and the food. I also love eating Penang rojak by. the way. It will be fund. I have added you into my SKYPE and waiting for you to accept me into yours.
Ah John, this is to inform you that, Penang Hokkien Podcast, is listed in the listing of Blogazine at, https://emuse.cc/blogazine/?page_id=3
Juyee, may be you can give me your ID as well. Just in case.
Hi Xiamen Ah Long,
What’s the RAR password for all your dialect songs? I tried ‘PENANG’ but doesn’t work.
Harlow…… Not PENANG lah. Penang ! 6 letters with capital P only. The rest small letters.
Go listen before the webmaster warns me…… ^__^
BTW – BTW…… A big discovery today.
You know we say Oi-Oi as Sleep. I go sleeping = Wa Ki Oi-Oi. A kid talk.
Today I just found out that in Xiamen they say a similar thing ! But not for kid, it’s for baby still in mommy’s stomach…… (womd)…… A pregnant colleague of mine was playing with her big stomach and she was mumbling: Or-Yee Or-Yee Ho Ho Koon…… Wow……
Hi Ah long,
Thanks for the password! I’ve more repeated verbs in Penang Hokkien:
Kai-kai
Pom-pom
Shh-Shh
in addition to your Oi-oi
Anyone has more?
Shua Hu – my skype id is juyeeteo
I look forward to hearing from you. Have you heard the Chaozhou TV and radio. I am enjoying learning to the radio of just pure Teochew currently.
Mam-mam = Eat
Nk-nk = Shit
Liu-liu = Ashamed……
Juyee, yes. I listen to it when I free. The DJ’s voice is so so sweet. Don’t know Hookien got such online radio or not.
