Thanks. I know your point. But there is a soft “k” sound that can be written better in the Pek Ji system. But I don’t know that at all. So, I’m romanizing it. Otherwise, oh is also black, oyster, etc. But thanks.

Kee, I agree I don’t know what I’m talking about. But most of my audience have to see it in the title at first glance what they are reading. I think only a handful are experts like you. That’s called creative license I guess.

Kee, I agree that we should set good example if possible. Why don’t you teach me the basic, and I’ll teach people how to read with the proper letters and codes. You can pass your Kang Hu over for us.
Would you be interested in writing up something basic, like how to write the different tones and spelling so that I can start writing it properly, but then create a separate page for reference?
I’d appreciate it if you’d be willing to share that we us.

Regarding the matter of pronunciation,I would like to stress the essence of ‘PENANG-style Hokkien’. It is full of variation and local slangs. It is diverse and flexible. New words get included and new ways to pronounce sometimes overwrites the original Hokkien way of pronunciation. Even different group of people in Penang have different ways of speaking Penang Hokkien.
I as a Penangite happily accept that Penang-style Hokkien is very incorrect if compared to the authentic Hokkien dialect. But I dare to openly declare that we are different from others. We are speaking a unique dialect on our own.
If everyone on PenangHokkien tries to change their own way of speaking into pure authentic Hokkien then I would say the essence of the PENANG-style Hokkien which in my own opinion is variation,flexibility and creativity.
By giving the statements above,I am not trying to say that we should stop ourselves from learning the proper Hokkien but only to learn more about the language without losing the essence of PENANG-style Hokkien.
I would like to quote a famous saying from our Chinese Martial Arts Legend Bruce Lee:
“Be formless,shapeless like water.Now you put water into a cup,it becomes the cup.You put water into a bottle,it becomes the bottle.You put it in a teapot,it becomes the teapot.Water can flow or it can crash.Be Water,my friend…”
If you talk about retaining penang style,John can’t correct anyone anymore.Everyone is free to made mistakes and create his vocaburaly. For me learning hokkien is to learn it properly as much as possible.People in China listened to this show and feel disgusting.But they won’t feel like that for taiwanese show.
One last thing to ask .What the hell we can learn it penang hokkien?No pronunciation for any kind of ancient chinese proverb and very limited knowledge of hokkien proverb .Penang hokkien standard is only primary school standard 3 until they don’t know how to say sorry in hokkien.
If John doesn’t learn it propertly now,until 2050 his knowledge of hokkien is still sampah standard. No kidding

You are missing a huge point here.
This is Penang Hokkien, the one that I grew up with. The one that means something to me.
No one should stop learning any languages. But I disagree on your goal of “fixing” the creole into something that is “correct”.
You sound very arrogant. You’re looking down at our own creole of Hokkien. Creole is the key. That’s what made Penang Hokkien unique.
Now, you may disagree with me, that’s fine. But I suggest starting your own website, writing your own books (like Tan XX as you called him). Don’t just come here and insult people.
I have been very open to your suggestions but your goal trying to fix Penang Hokkien and make it better is totally missing my goal and passion for it. I merely want to encourage the use of this unique creole.
It may make you feel better for spitting on us, but it’ll never stop thousands of people having fun and having special connections and showing their love for this unique creole called Penang Hokkien.
Kee, I appreciate your passion for the origin of Hokkien. Use your passion for good. Create something you believe in. Start your own community. Don’t cone here to insult mine. That’s a waste of your passion and talent. Be original. You’ll like the outcome. And you’ll probably feel more satisfied then looking down at us.

That is why I seldom go to any forum.I wrote tan XX because I can’t remember his name at all.Nothing insult in chinese if you write chen X in chinese.You think it as I want to insult him. In forum when we don’t see each other and listen to his voice misunderstood can easily happened .
This is the hokkien I grow up too.I am just two years older than you.I grow up in taiping and the hokkien is exactly the same. Not that I hate this dialect but just people have no knowledge at all until my hokkien father and mother can’t even pronunce their name correctly and the name for their children as well.
That is why we need to study .We don’t want to be called huan na.As simple as that. We want to be called hokkien tng lang.

my friend Taiwanese listen to Penanghokkien…They laugh unstop.
though, our PenangHokkien slang is different from Taiwan..but they like it.
John, i forgot which topics when u said “Pak Chiu Cheng”, they laugh till dead…i was suprise that Taiwanese can understand “Pak Chiu Cheng”…
“Cibai” and “Lanciao” they also can understand oh….
but they dont understand “Puki”.
