Hey, this episode is very “hor-chior” too. I was laughing over your Bahasa Pasar while preparing dinner. Ya, it’s true, i guess many people feel very “SONG” listening to PG Hokkien, I am one of them too. Lapchiong & Katakpuru’s wedding sound so grand, and congratulations to the newly wedd Mr.Chai-koay & your HK wife. Look forward to the next episode,( Ah John, longer than half an hour is OK lah.) 😉

I remember ??? is pronounced as sang(1)kae(1)mm(4) by my family, since ? is always sang(3). Katakbulu pronounces it as seng(1)kae(1)mm(4) might perhaps due to the pronunciation of ? in Teochew which is seng(3)?

  4. Katakpuru

Thanks ar mint. You must have heard me coughing during the recording, hahaha…I’m fine it just that lap chiong was smoking during the podcast… i miss you all in penang too. Luckily i’m in KL, can go back as often as i like..hope to see you soon…

Thanks Penangknia, my hokkien speaking already ‘campur-aduk’ especially when our parents are not pure hokkien.. Hope you like this episode..

    Hi Katakpulu,

I like this episode, as much as the last one. Your Hokkien is very good too. Not just pronunciation but also its application-????. I am always thrilled whenever I heard new P.H. vocabulary conjugated by you and Ah John from other languages, like ???dian3phae1). Penang Hokkien is always rojak. Influence from Teochew, which is already very close to Hokkien in its ‘pure’ form, is simply a ‘natural’ thing to happen to Penang Hokkien. In Penang Hokkien the first person pronoun is ‘ua’, not ‘gua’ in Penang Hokkien is probably influeced by Teochew (only one of the hypothesis, ‘ua’ could have still been an independent development of Penang Hokkien and ‘original’ China Hokkien), since there are many Teochew people in northen Malaya (some say more than Hokkien people).

  7. Penangknia

?????????? Usually (from what I heard), ?? is pronounced as hao3sneh1, same as ? which is also sneh1. However southern Malaya and may be also Teochew pronounce it as snie1. The ??? who is familiar with different dialects might deliberately use another variant of ? pronunciation to make what she says rhyme.I’ve learnt that pronunciation of many words that are pronounced differently in Penang Hokkien and Southern Malaya Hokkien are actually pronounced the same in Penang Hokkien or Southern Hokkien and Teochew.

Mine is quite mix with mandarin one so not as powderful.

  10. Xiamen Ah Long

Oh. Got to listen to it now. I shared with some Penang friends here too, hopefully they will start listening to it…… ^_^

  11. Xiamen Ah Long

Penangknia ! After checking with colleagues from Chaozhou and Shantou, ? is the same as Hokkien, there’s no unique pronunciation of this character in their dialect……. ^_^

  12. Penangknia

Hmm, then I wonder why Katakpulu pronoucned it as seng, instead of sang? You sure ? is pronounced the same all Zhangzhou, Quanzhou, Amoy and Teochew dialects?

  13. John Ong

Okay, I’m going to say that again. Since every time I spoke to my mom about this show, she always asks me to tell Katakpuru that she’s really good, and fun to listen to.
