We discussed the new environmentally friendly action that the Penang government is taking to reduce plastic bag (plastik long – in Hokkien) usage. What do you think about it? Are you following? Are you annoyed? Let us know.
Its EFFECTIVE! Yesterday was Monday, i saw my parents coming back from groceries in Sunshine Farlim using the Sunshine’s clothes-bag, instead of the usual plastic bag. Its a good thing start.

To those who have not tried using the cloth shopping bags, please try. I find that it is easier to carry my groceries compared to using plastic bags. It is neater and less clumsy. Try it and you will understand what I mean.

Government of South Australia banned the use of lightweight plastic bags in May 2009. I think it is a wonderful idea that Penang is catching up. I am proud of that. I think Malaysia should enforce the bag ban like give fines to those shops that either sell or give away the lightweight plastic bags. What’s wrong with using the green multiple use bag? It is washable, comfortable on the handle and the bags are recycled into long lasting plastic items such as park benches, playground furniture and bollards (I just found out this!). If some people (retailers and/or consumers) start to follow this environmentally friendly action, more people will follow too. Sedikit-dikit menjadi bukit. Way to go, Penang!
