Apom Bokkua (did I spell that right?!) is trully very new to me but since I’ve been very English-ised….I wouldn’t know right from wrong anyways. Anyone offering Hokkien 101? 😛

I think it’s very common to eat the ‘Kau Chan Kuih’ that way…..I ate it exactly the same way too when I was young. Anyone else? 😛

  2. John Ong

kshern: I have never heard of apom bokkua before either. Perhaps some of the listeners can tell us here in the comment section whether or not you use the term apom bokkua too. I’ve never heard of it until Heow Hong mentioned it.

I agree. Kau Chan Kuih is just fun to eat like that for kids especially. We’ll see what the others think.

  3. Yik Wen

Ahh!! Man you guys churn out new episodes real fast. I’ve fallen behind by three episodes already cos I’m preparing for school exams =(. WIll try to catch up once I’m free….in about one month’s time. God knows how many more episodes you guys would have made by then.

Anyways…a little suggestion. I’ve been recommending your website to my friends but I doubt if they have tried listening yet. Could you guys maybe talk about the high schools of Penang while you guys were still studying? I’m sure that’ll grab some of my friends’ attention. I’m studying in Jit Sin, non-independent.

But that’s just my 2 cents. Not that I’m telling you guys what to do or anything =).

  4. verb

I am hooked!! Been listening to your podcast right from the start 🙂
Think Hiaw Hong get it wrong lah…. I stay in Penang so long, also takade hear before the word Apom Bokkua… its called Apom Balik lah…

  5. John Ong

Yik Wen: Thanks for the suggestion. We’ll go back and revisit the high school theme in the future. We have actually done some episodes about high schools. But we’ll definitely have more in the future we can talk about.

Verb: Thanks! I think you’re right. Perhaps it is just a family saying, and not quite the actual common saying.

  6. hush4me

haha…apparently, lots of penangites still calls ‘rempah udang’ as ‘lampah udang’ with a slang. *wink* And to think that our parents ask us not to ‘kong chau ua’. 😛

  7. John Ong

hush4me: Thanks for you comment. I pinjam your photo you have on your blog and flickr. Hope that’s okay. Yeah, I laughed SO much, as you heard. I couldn’t stand it. We totally didn’t plan on stuff like that. We just briefly pick a topic and go on with whatever comes up. And time and time again, I get so entertained by Heow Hong and KE.

  11. Shen

I havent heard about Apong bokkua too.. i think this is hiaw hong’s vocab. ^^ lah. Talking about the kam-chia-cui in front of Pykett school,i really miss it. Next trip when i go back Msia, surely must go there and drink a glass ^^ (I almost forgot about this kam-chia-cui stall already lah!! Luckily you all mentioned it,kamsiah!)

  12. kew

Not sure about others, but this show which I subscribed through Itunes were cut off when you guys speak about the hongkong concert… wonder if this is just my system or a general problem??

  13. John Ong

kew: It sounds like the download wasn’t complete perhaps. You can always come to the site, and download the file by Right Click on the ((( LISTEN ))) link. But thanks for pointing that out.

Tomorrow: The Apom Balik can be found everywhere, but the one we talked about is in front of Union Primary school.

Shen: I really liked the kam chia chui.

It appears that only Heow Hong was the only one saying Apom Bokkua. Both KE and I haven’t heard of it either. Must be his family saying.

Thanks for all your comments here. It’s so nice to see such lively discussion and comments here.

  14. icy dog

Heow Hong said he hates the way the girl sitting behind him pronounced the word ‘OK’.. but when i listened to another show b4, i found that he also pronounced in that way..he must be influenced by that girl huh~~haha..cham liao, Heow Hong, gotta slap yourself then..John, remember to tell him ya =P

u guys were talking about the pang sai stuff. I remember there was once when this became a topic of my gang of frens from Penang + Butterworth. (We are all in Melbourne, Aus) We were gen-kiu+ing the way of cleaning our buttocks after pang sai.. we found some interesting stuff. My frens frm Butterworth will reach their buttocks frm front (meaning their hands will ‘extend’ to their buttocks frm the front) ; frens frm Penang clean frm back directly.. how about u guys?? any other interesting ways of cleaning? ^_~

  15. xian

yes icy dog! you point it out!!!! i was laughing out loud when he complained about that girl, especially the ‘slapping’ part…he didn’t realise that he is badly ‘infected’ too! hahaha!!

  16. icy dog

hehe.. nevermind.. since he always tell soooooo many jokes, we forgive him loh~~ haha..
i love to hear their laughs.. i couldn’t help myself and laugh out loud uncontrollable everytime.. =p
